Savolla is powerful enough to control this monster
During the prologue quest, Defending Kaer Morhen, Geralt encounters a powerful mage called Savolla. One of Geralt's companions, Triss Merigold, has heard of him before, and literally describes him as, "ambitious and insane." His strength as a mage is made abundantly clear as he summons forth a frightener, one of the most powerful monsters in existence. You're given the choice to help Vesemir fight off the frightener, or to help Triss in saving the lab. If you choose the latter, Geralt will fight Savolla himself, and kill him. If, however, you choose to assist Vesemir, Triss or Eskel will kill the mage.
