The Mother of Gnosis
The Birth of Yaldabaoth
Sophia, in her love for The Almighty One, wished to imitate his ex nihilo creative powers. She was denied this power but chose to copy them anyway. She then became impregnated by her own means, as she desired. However, because she went against the wishes of God, her pregnancy was illegitimate and she gave birth to an abhorrent fetus with the head of a lion and the body of a snake. She named this child Yaldabaoth (Character) and sealed him away from all things. Called "the blind god" (i.e., ignorance), Yaldabaoth declared himself to be the only being in existence, based on what he was able to perceive immediately around himself. He grew to become the Demiurge (Concept) and created our universe and the many worlds that inhabit it.
To help him rule over the different worlds, Yaldabaoth created an additional seven rulers, or archons. Each archon had power over seven separate spheres of creation, with Yaldabaoth presiding above everything in the eighth sphere. These archons and their angels condoned widespread wickedness, especially against Adam and Eve.
The Redemption of Sophia
Sophia lamented on what she had done and the chaos that Yaldabaoth was permeating throughout his creation. She repented to God and turned one of Yaldabaoth's sons against him. Because of this, God gave her the dominion of a ninth sphere above Yaldabaoth where she monitors his tyrannical deeds and ignorant words. In essence, the story of Sophia tells that true wisdom results from the identification and prevailing over of one's own enacted ignorances.
