Japanese organization responsible for providing ratings for games released in Japan.

Overview

Often abbreviated as CERO, the organization was founded in 2002 as a non-profit and provides ratings for games released in Japan. Similar to the ESRB, games are submitted by game publishers for review by an impartial panel of raters.

Age Ratings

Games are rated both on age and content. The system was overhauled in 2006 with the original 4 separate age ratings being replaced by 5 new ratings.

All Ages became A.

12 and older became B.

15 and older became C.

18 and older became D and Z.

Each of the present age ratings is given a corresponding representative colour. displayed on the spine of game boxes. The age ratings system at present is as follows:

Age Rating	Description
\|\|Cero A: for all ages. Expressions and content subjected to age-specific limitation are not included in the game, thereby being suitable for all ages. Colour: Black
\|\|Cero B: for 12 year olds and above. Expression and content suitable only to 12 year olds and above are included in the game. Colour: Green
\|\|Cero C: for 15 year olds and above. Expression and content suitable only to 15 year olds and above are included in the game. Colour: Blue
\|\|Cero D: for 17 year olds and above. Expression and content suitable only to 17 year olds and above are included in the game. Colour: Orange
\|\|Cero Z: for 18 year olds and above only. Expression and content suitable only to 18 year olds and above are included in the game. (This assumes that the game should not be sold or distributed to those younger than 18 years old. Colour: Red

Three additional ratings are available for specific circumstances. They are represented as follows.
