Pony Canyon was founded in 1966, starting out as a record label. It was renamed to Pony Inc. in 1970.  The final name, Pony Canyon, was a result of the merger the Canyon record company in 1987. From 1982 onwards, Pony Inc. started to publish and release computer games.
