Overview
Valhalla Game Studios was a development house located in Tokyo, Japan that was founded by ex- Tecmo employee Tomonobu Itagaki (Person) and a number of fellow ex- Team Ninja (Company) staff members on February 16, 2010. The company was initially organized as a start-up following Itagaki's heated departure from Tecmo. Prior to the announcement of the company's official name, Valhalla Game Studios was publicly known by the temporary, similarly Norse-themed name "Tokyo Viking."
Commercial Failure of Devil's Third
Itagaki's first and only major project was Devil's Third. The game was initially planned to be published by THQ (Company) on the Xbox 360 (Platform) and PS3. However, on May 15, 2012, THQ announced during a investor's call that they were dropping the game as publisher due to financial difficulties. THQ was eventually declared bankrupt and its remaining assets were liquidated in early 2013. After reclaiming the full rights to Devil's Third, Valhalla Game Studios was approached by Nintendo (Company), and a new agreement was struck. Nintendo served as the publisher of Devil's Third, which remains a Wii U (Platform) exclusive to this day. The Wii-U platform is one of Nintendo's biggest failures. No port for Nintendo Switch (Platform) has materialized, nor have any followup sequel's to complete the Devil's Third Trilogy.
Success of Soleil Ltd.
Ironically, Vahalla's subsidiary Soleil found greater success and continues today despite their parent company disappearing. Itagaki has since formed two versions of a more independent studio called Itagaki Games (Company), with slightly different legal registries.
