A classic D&D monster, carrion crawlers are enormous vermiform aberrations that eat dead bodies. They're generally encountered wherever corpses can be found.

Carrion crawlers are 3'-4' long centipede-like creatures that mostly prey on dead tissue, but will attack living creatures if provoked or hungry enough. The tentacles on the sides of its head can be used to stun its enemies. They have strong night vision and a powerful sense of smell with which to hunt their chosen food source in pitch darkness. A carrion crawler is being kept as a pet by a crazy old man underneath Athkatla in Baldur's Gate 2. It can be killed for its blood, which is required for a sidequest.
