Solstice
FRANCHISE »
A pair of isometric puzzle-platformer games. The two are directly linked, with the sequel starring the first game's hero's son.

Overview

Solstice and Equinox are a pair of games that feature isometric puzzle-platforming action, a genre that saw its heyday for the Commodore 64 with games like Head Over Heels (Game) and Knight Lore (Game). They were developed by defunct UK development studio Software Creations (which briefly became known as Acclaim Studios Manchester). In Solstice, released for the NES in 1990, the player assumes the role of Shadax the wizard as he fights to rescue the world (and the comely Princess Eleanor) from Morbius the Malevolent, a powerful and invincible rival. In order to beat him, Shadax must first assemble the Staff of Demnos, the parts of which can be found in the dungeons of Kastlerock where the game takes place. In Equinox (Game), released for the SNES in 1994 (1993 in Japan), the player assumes the role of Glendaal, the son of Shadax. Shadax has been captured by his former apprentice Sonia after she turns evil. Rather than a single dungeon, like in the original game, the player makes their way across the world to eight separate dungeons on eight separate continents. To complicate matters, each dungeon can have numerous entrances and the player must find 12 tokens to summon the boss and defeat them, which opens the way to the next dungeon. The pair of games are best known for their difficulty and their soundtracks, composed by Tim Follin (Person). Though narratively unrelated to the duo, Software Creations also created Altered Space for the Game Boy which features similar gameplay in a sci-fi setting.
