Overview

A-Rank Thunder Tanjouhen ("A-Rank Thunder Origin Story") is a top-down adventure game with RPG combat that's exclusive to the Japanese Mega CD. Its story involves a young scientist, Yutaka, who is experimented upon to become a biological weapon, the titular A-Rank Thunder. He decides to rebel against the underworld organization that did this to him before they can overthrow the Japanese government, taking down other monstrous henchmen who have undergone a similar process. The game spends much of its time in its "adventure" mode, with Yutaka walking around locations investigating areas of interest for clues and information. When talking to NPCs the game will sometimes switch to its "LIP", or Live Interactive Picture, mode which zooms in on the characters' faces and lets players choose dialogue options that subtly shift Yutaka's personality based on the emotions behind his responses. The combat system uses randomly drawn cards that determines the protagonist's attack strength.
