Ancient Anguish is a Multi-User Dungeon or MUD has been in operation since 1992. It is set in a high-fantasy setting, with the playable races consisting of human, elf, half-elf, dwarf and orc. A number of classes have been added over the years such as: fighter, mage, necromancer, paladin, cleric, shapeshifter, artificer, ranger and rogues (who may, or may not exist). A unique feature of Ancient Anguish is that it features a coordinate based map, which accompanied by an ASCII version of the over-world. This allows a player to get a sense of an open world while exploring. This world has expanded over the years adding new islands and continents. In addition, the boundary 'mists' that represented the end of the world have retreated in all directions allowing players access to new content. Players can connect to this text-based game via 'telnet' to "ancient.anguish.org" port 2222, or by using a MUD client. A flash version is also available on the Ancient Anguish web-site. The games content is created by volunteers: those who have enough experience and quest points may chose to become 'wizards', immortals who have the ability to write code. This is common among MUDs, all content is player created except from a few examples from the default MUD library. Raph Koster, one of the original designers of Ultima Online (Game) cites it as an influence to his work, which went on to in turn influence Everquest and World of Warcraft (Game). Although the popularity of MUDs has decreased with the advent of MMOs, Ancient Anguish still regularly boasts 20 or so odd players, particularly on weekend evenings.
