Brutal: Paws of Fury is a 2D fighting game developed and published by GameTek for the Sega Genesis and Sega CD (Platform) in October 1994.

Set in the secluded Brutal Island, Brutal follows anthropomorphic animals as martial artists of various disciplines as they compete in a tournament held by the mysterious Dali Llama (Character). It is known for its unique password system, where players must "learn" their fighter's special moves by winning matches and training with them, for its replay system, and for its elaborate theme of Ancient Chinese wisdom (including use of the yin-yang and having each fighter representing a "path of wisdom").

It was ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Platform) in December 1994 by Eurocom. The SNES version was released in North America by Cybersoft, Europe by GameTek, and Japan (as Animal Takeranden: BRUTAL) by Kemco (Company). It was also ported in 1995 by GameTek to both the Amiga (Platform) and Amiga CD32 (Platform) (both only in Europe), DOS PCs (only in North America), and Sega 32X (Platform) (only in North America, known in-game as Brutal Unleashed: Above the Claw). Both the PC and 32X versions, known in-artwork as Brutal: Above the Claw, feature redrawn backgrounds, playable bosses, and two new combatants.

Gameplay

Brutal is a six-button fighting game, with three punches and three kicks of different strengths.

Characters

Each fighter in the game is a different anthropomorphic animal and represents a different martial arts style (real or fictional). Most versions of the game include eight playable fighters and two unlockable bosses, while some earlier consoles exclude two characters. Two additional fighters were made for the last versions (while making the two boss characters playable from the start).

Base Roster

Bosses

Both are unlocked from the start in the PC and 32X versions.

  • Karate Croc (Character) (crocodile, "Street Brawler" style) - An inhabitant of Brutal Island who participates in the tournament uninvited. He is the game's sub-boss and is not included in the SNES or Genesis versions.
  • Dali Llama (Character) (llama, "Divine" style) - The game's final boss, tournament organizer, and most powerful mortal alive.

PC/32X Versions Only

  • Chung Poe (mole, "Sabbbaal" style) - An elder combatant who feeds off discord. While he's unassumingly tiny, he fights while transformed into a larger, ancient, dragon-like creature.
  • Psycho Kitty (cat, "Cat Fight" style) - A volatile creature from the mountains who lives from the heart. Unlike other fighters, he is drawn in a rougher cartoon style.
