It's the Bubster!

Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, sometimes known simply as Bubsy, is a comedic side-scrolling platformer developed by Accolade (along with Solid Software (Company)) and published by Accolade for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Platform) and Sega Genesis in North America and Europe throughout 1993, beginning with the North American SNES release in May 1993.

In Bubsy, players control the wise-cracking anthropomorphic cartoon bobcat of the same name as he journeys to stop a group of aliens (known as "Woolies") from plundering the planet's supply of yarn balls. Along with Bubsy's ability to glide through the air, the game is known for its various puns and wise-cracking voice-acted dialogue from the bobcat. It received multiple sequels throughout the mid-1990's (with Bubsy II (Game), Bubsy in: Fractured Furry Tales, and Bubsy 3D (Game)), followed by multiple revivals in the 2010's and 2020's (with Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, Bubsy: Paws on Fire!, and Bubsy 4D (Game)).

The SNES version later received a Japanese release by Pack-In-Video on June 17, 1994, where it was retitled to Yamaneko Bubsy no Daibōken (or "The Grand Adventure of Bubsy Wildcat") and localized with Japanese dialogue. An enhanced conversion of the original game for Windows PCs, titled Super Bubsy, was released on May 19, 1997. Ported by ATI Technologies, Super Bubsy contained upscaled graphics, new sound effects and higher-quality voice acting, multiple difficulty levels, and the unlockable pilot episode for the unsuccessful Bubsy animated series.

The original SNES version of the game, along with its direct sequel, was digitally re-released on the PC by Retroism in 2015 as Bubsy Two-Fur. A direct emulation of the SNES version, it is the first known use of a SNES emulator in a commercial product not on a Nintendo console. The SNES, Genesis, and Super Famicom versions of the game were later included in the 2025 compilation Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection.

Gameplay

The game plays like a traditional sidescrolling platformer similar to Sonic the Hedgehog (Game). Players run through levels, attempting to reach the end of the level (before the time runs out) while eliminating enemies, gaining score, collecting powerups, and avoiding deadly obstacles.

Bubsy has two abilities at his disposal: jumping (by pressing the Jump button) and gliding (by pressing the Glide button). Gliding reduces his downward falling speed, and activating it at the right time before bouncing up allows Bubsy to be propelled much higher than usual.

Running into enemies, touching deadly obstacles (such as water, spiked pits), and fall damage can kill Bubsy in one hit (as he has no health system whatsoever). However, jumping or gliding onto enemies can eliminate them (getting them out of Bubsy's way while giving the player score). Due to the difficulty, there are plenty of checkpoints (for Bubsy to respawn at) and extra lives (as if starting with nine lives, like the cat mythology, is easy enough) scattered around levels.

There are two power-up shirts that Bubsy can collect: Shadow Bubsy (which makes him pass through enemies) and Super Bubsy (which makes him invincible to everything). There are also numbered t-shirts that grant him extra lives and a looping arrow that grants an extra continue.

Levels

The game includes 16 total levels ("chapters" in the SNES/Genesis version, "episodes" in the PC version), with the first 15 split into areas of three levels (with the third one having a boss fight at the end). These areas include hilly villages, carnivals, desert canyons, forest rivers, and tall treetops. The final level is set in space, aboard the Woolie mothership, with a final boss encounter at the end.

Each level has their own unique quote from Bubsy, which is the only dialogue in the game.

  1. Cheese Wheels of Doom - "What could paws-ibly go wrong?"
  2. Forbidden Plummet - "Did I mention I don't like heights?"
  3. A Bridge Too Fur - "More like 'A Bridge Too Short'!"
  4. Fair Condition - "Hey, whatever blows your hair back.!"
  5. Night of the Bobcat - "Hey, I thought I saw Elvis back there!"

  12. Claws for Alarm - "Is there a veterinarian in the audience?"
  13. Eye of the Bobcat - "That's it, I'm outta here. You can't make me."
  14. No Time to Paws - "What, and give up show business?"
  15. Lethal Woolie - "Somebody dial 911!"
  16. A Farewell to Woolies - "Whoa, are you still playing this thing?"
