Free Cell
A 1988 shareware MS-DOS digital card solitaire game based on the 1979 PLATO game Freecell. One of the precursors to the more-familiar Microsoft game FreeCell, created by the same developer.
Overview
Free Cell is a shareware digital card solitaire game developed and published by Frog and Peach Software for MS-DOS PCs in 1988. An unofficial adaptation of the 1979 PLATO (Platform) game Freecell (Game), Free Cell is based on the card game Baker's Game, where players have to manage eight cascades of open-faced cards (with the aid of four "cells" for temporarily storing cards) in order to create four full foundation piles (one for each suit in ascending rank, similar to Klondike). The game is notable for being a precursor to the 1991 Windows game FreeCell (Game), as the sole developer of Frog and Peach Software (Jim Horne) adapted the system using Microsoft's card graphics library for the Microsoft Entertainment Pack (Franchise) series during his employment at Microsoft.
