Hero Panda Bomber is a free-to-play arena Bomberman-style 3D mobile game developed by ElitApps. The player assumes the role of a panda hero who faces to protect and free all captured panda cubs while battling the enemies who patrol the arenas. By successfully clearing levels, players accumulate gold and diamonds, which both serve as the in-game currency for upgrading the player's stats and abilities before engaging the next arena. The Android version was released on Google Play December 2, 2014, with the iOS version to be released in the following weeks. The game utilizes the support of NVIDIA's Shield tablet and runs enhanced graphics on NVIDIA Tegra K1 devices.
The player controls the panda hero either via a virtual on-screen joystick on Android / iOS devices or using the NVIDIA controller for NVIDIA SHIELD. In addition to navigating the arenas which are layed-out grid-wise, the player can place bombs and use special abilities, as well as collect special items obtained from destroyed blocks. In general, blocks will bar the way to the panda cubs which – in combination with the patrolling enemies - can become challenging to survive, especially in later levels where the enemies are tougher and the blocks sturdier. The game teaches the player the basics of controls and gameplay in the first few levels through illustrated tutorials.
There is a range of different enemy NPCs who will patrol the arenas and try to hurt the player, ranging from weak 1-hit guards to stronger, more challenging opponents, elite generals (bosses) and the emperor himself as the final boss.
Different kinds of power-ups can be found in the arenas, including an increase to the flame range of the bombs, movement speed bonuses and additional increase in multiple bombs available for simultaneous placement.
In addition to placing timed bombs the player has access to three abilities: TNT, Shield and Detonator.
The player enters the arenas with stats which can be modified in the pre-game world lobby: health and bomb strength. Increasing health increases the hitpoints available and makes the panda grow a little. Increasing the bomb strength adds +1 damage to every bomb explosion. These stats are available during the player’s attempt of the next arena and are a useful addition to the arsenal when facing more difficult levels.
The game uses two types of in-game currency: gold coins and diamonds. Each can be collected within the levels itself (albeit the diamonds being a rare resource) and serve as currency for purchasing pre-game stat boosts and power-ups.
