Overview

Hollywood Squares, not to be confused with the 2010 game of the same name, is a trivia game developed and published by by Gametek for the Apple II, Commodore 64, and DOS PCs in North America in 1988. It later received a port by Rare for the Nintendo Entertainment System in September 1989.

An adaptation of the syndicated TV game show of the same name, Hollywood Squares has two contestants (one "X" player and one "O" player) taking turns choosing a celebrity guest from a large 3×3 grid, having the host ask a trivia question to them, and gauging the veracity of the answer provided, all in an attempt to get three-in-a-row (similar to tic-tac-toe).

Though the game didn't feature any real-life celebrities, it did persist with the TV show's custom of having the celebs provide a corny joke answer before their real answer was given. Players could also find the secret square to earn a "mystery prize", or have a chance at "winning a car" by guessing which of five keys would unlock it.

The original game show later received a second adaptation in 2010, which features actual celebrity guests instead of more generic ones.
