Overview

Genei Toshi: Illusion City is a top-down adventure game/turn-based RPG hybrid that was first released on MSX systems by Micro Cabin in 1991. It was subsequently ported to other Japanese home computers of the era, such as the FM Towns (Platform) and PC-98, as well as the Mega CD console. The game is set in the then-future of the early 21st century. Demons suddenly spawn all around Asia causing widespread panic and devastation, none more so than the port city of Hong Kong. After being written off as unsalvageable, a corporation named SIVA took control and saved its remaining population. It then declared the once autonomous territory an independent sovereign state. The game follows a demon-hunter, Tianren, as he attempts to find the truth behind the city's saviors and their relation to the demons. The game uses a top-down perspective for its exploration and a standard turn-based battle mode that places player characters across the bottom of the screen and enemies across the top, similar to the Phantasy Star (Franchise) series.
