Learn to Play Chess with Fritz & Chesster, known in some European and later digital releases as Fritz & Chesster: Learn to Play Chess and in Germany as Fritz & Fertig, is a chess-themed educational game developed by ChessBase and published by Terzio for the PC (Platform) in Europe in 2002-2003, with a North American release by Viva Media on July 2003. The first in a children's-focused spin-off series of the Fritz (Franchise) series of chess games, Fritz & Chesster intends to teach the game of chess through a series of mini-games and training exercises, all tied together with a cartoon by children's book author Jörg Hilbert. Afterwards, they can play a traditional game of chess against an AI opponent. The game's story follows Fritz, the young son of King White, as he becomes king for a day when his parents go on vacation. When he is challenged by the dastardly King Black to a chess duel for the kingdom's honor, he and his cousin Bianca must train in the game's fundamentals; first through a series of mini-games (during a stroll through the kingdom with the friendly King Kaleidoscope) and then through a series of training exercises at the Intelligym (coached by the ingenious Chesster the Cheshire Rat). The game later received multiple sequels, as well as a Europe-only handheld port for the Nintendo DS (Platform) on February 6, 2009, ported by Morgen Studios (Company) and co-published by Deep Silver (Company). Along with touch controls, the DS version features Download Play (Concept) wireless multiplayer. The original game later received a digital release for PC, Mac (Platform), and Linux (Platform) computers on May 11, 2023.
