Macrotis: A Mother's Journey is an indie, 2.5D puzzle-platformer that is developed by Proud Dinosaurs (Company) in Istanbul (Location), Turkey (Location). The game offers an immersive story with challenging puzzles in an enchanting ambience. Macrotis has no map and no HUD to enhance immersion. The game is released on February 8, 2019, for PC (Platform) via Steam (Concept).
The story is centered on Mother Bilby, the female protagonist, who is desperately trying to save her children that got separated from her because of a flood caused by an unnatural, never-ending rain. The character has various natural abilities and gains some supernatural abilities throughout the game that enables her to interact with the environment in order to solve difficult puzzles and overcome deadly traps. The game includes collectible items that unlocks hidden information about the lore of the magical world of Macrotis for curious players who desire to know more.
The puzzle aspect of the game is more emphasized than platformer/runner aspects even though Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey is a puzzle-platformer. The character has many different abilities. As a rodent, she can interact with the environment by digging and gnawing certain locations. Later on, she gains a magical form which lets her pass-through thin walls and jump on top of fragile platforms. She can also magically erect walls to climb on top of them, prevent traps from killing her, and stop moving objects. Aside from these features she can jump, pull and push objects, pull levers and press on pressure plates. The character can climb onto ledges she can grab on and climb up and down onto ropes and vines.
Macrotis is designed with a simple foundation in mind “observe the puzzle, understand what must be done and execute”. The game punishes the player if they try to do things without a goal in mind. It is possible to render puzzles unsolvable by executing the wrong move or just by randomly changing the environment. However, the game has checkpoints on every corner, so the players get stuck only in their current puzzles.
Macrotis focuses mostly on environment-based puzzles. This means that the puzzles involve interacting with the environment by combining different abilities of the character. The game introduces several different types of puzzles as the game progresses. For example, while early puzzles require simple abilities where the player is expected to push objects, dig through walls, and gnaw vines, later on, puzzles become more complex, involving liquid mechanics, levers, pressure plates, and traps that require a combination of both natural and supernatural abilities.
