Max Ammo was a 3D cover-based shooter, for Android devices, developed between 2013 and 2015 by Wooga GmbH. The game was developed in Unity, and an alpha version was released by Mantis Shrimp GmbH - a daughter company set up by Wooga GmbH to anonymously test new mobile games (Mantis Shrimp GmbH was terminated at the end of 2023).
Gameplay The goal of the game was to guide the eponymous hero of the game from cover to cover to the end of the level, shooting alien invaders along the way. At the end of some levels there would be an alien boss to defeat. The player could control the main character by swiping left or right, by swiping up to run forward to the next row of covers, and by tapping to shoot enemies. As the player progressed, Max Ammo could unlock new, more powerful weapons, special weapon upgrades, and other improvements.
Distinct Features The visual design was based on retro Sci-Fi movies and comics. The game took place in an alternate Fifties, where the world is invaded by aliens, and a secret agency fights back. Max Ammo was a fully 3D game, with detailed environments and character models. The environments featured lighting effects baked into the textures, as well as animated background characters, adding an additional layer of detail and depth.
Development and Cancellation Development started late 2013, with pre-production starting in January 2014. The project was stopped in September 2015, after the release of an alpha version of the game, and mediocre player results showed further development would be too risky.
