Overview

Maya the Bee & Her Friends is the inaugural game starring the character, who began life as a character in the Gernan book 'Die Biene Maja und ihre Abenteue'r, written by Waldemar Bonsels and released in 1912. The specific incarnation is loosely based on the 1975 anime, Mitsubachi Māya no Bōken'. Maya the Bee & Her Friends actually began life as a South Park (Franchise) game, developed alongside the Nintendo 64 (Platform)/PlayStation (Platform) title. Reportedly, Matt Stone (Person) and Trey Parker (Person) themselves denied release of the title, citing that the Game Boy Color (Platform)'s market base was primarily children and that the license was inappropriate for that audience. Developers Crawfish Interactive (Company) spent the next year retooling the game to focus on Maya, another license Acclaim had at the time. It was released exclusively for the European market in 2000.
