Overview

Professional Mahjong Gokuu is a riichi mahjong game developed by Chat Noir (Company) and published by ASCII for the Famicom Disk System (Platform) in Japan on December 25, 1986.

A successor to Chat Noir's earlier Professional Mahjong (Game), Professional Mahjong Gokuu presents the game of mahjong in the standard "table view" (rather than the "grid view" of most earlier mahjong games).

As the name and later box art implies, the game pits the player against several characters from the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West, with the player implied to be the mythical figure Son Gokuu.

The game was later ported to Japanese computers, with the NEC PC-98 version released in 1987, the X68000, FM-7, MSX (Platform), and NEC PC-88 versions released in 1988, and the FM Towns (Platform) version released in 1989. These versions add a ranking system for the player, which rises and falls depending on match results. The game received multiple sequels, building on both its game engine and its use of characters and themes from Journey to the West.

Rule Settings

These settings are for the FDS version.

食い断 (Kui-tan) - Allows the tanyao (no terminal or honor tile) yaku to be counted with an exposed hand.
槓ウラ (Kan-ura) - An additional uradora is revealed for each kandora in play.
西入 (Sha-nyuu) - If the top player does not reach 30,000 points by the end of the second round (South), the game plays a third round (West).
一発 (Ippatsu) - After declaring riichi, players can receive an additional yaku if they receive a winning tile within an uninterrupted set of opponent tile draws.
三連刻 (Sanrenkou) - Allows an additional two-han yaku with three sequential triplets of the same suit.
四連刻 (Suurenkou) - Allows an additional yakuman with four sequential triplets of the same suit.
大車輪 (Daisharin) - Allows an additional yakuman with a closed hand of all sequential non-terminal pairs of the same suit.
八連荘 (Paarenchan) - Players who win their eighth consecutive hand receives an automatic yakuman on their eighth win.
馬 (Uma) - Applies the uma spread to the final score.
不聴罰 (Noten-batsu) - After an exhaustive draw, players without a tenpai hand must give penalty points to those with a tenpai hand.
