Released in 2018 by two indie developers without a proper team name, Re:Spite is a 2D isometric MMORPG with a grid-based movement system. After creating a character, players are free to explore and interact with the game's world along with players from across the globe. The game encourages socializing and roleplaying by focusing on character customization, readily accessible chat features, and by disallowing players to have numbers or special characters in their character names.
Although the combat system is basic for the time being, there are plans for it to be developed into something far more elaborate. Alongside social aspects, the game will eventually be worth playing strictly as a game with character progression, content, and challenges.
Re:Spite's graphics are strictly made as pixel art with high end SNES games in mind as inspiration. The graphics tend to appear colorful and cartoony with some anime inspiration for character hairstyles and expressions. The 2D isometric setup allows players to walk behind objects or access areas that give an illusion of depth, but the world is actually completely flat.
The palette is not restricted, allowing the color count on screen to exceed that which is seen in older games, but most tiles, equipment, and objects individually keep their own color count to a minimum, such as using no more than 4-8 colors each (depending on the size of the graphic). The screen resolution and sprites are much larger than classic console games, making this amount of colors an important part of maintaining a certain level of detail.
Title screens and NPC portraits are created as digital art. Characters tend to be drawn with fairly realistic proportions, somewhat exaggerated muscles, and anime-ish faces that aim for a somewhat serious look.
Development began in 2014 by an indie programmer (Abi) and artist (Danno). The game had a closed testing period throughout December 2017, eventually releasing to the public on May 12, 2018.
The developers do not have an official team name and simply refer to themselves as "Re:Spite Team" for the time being. A musician (Skutieos) later joined the team in 2017.
Updates tend to be released within 1-2 months of the most recent update. Starting from v1, it took 6 weeks to release v2, then 5 weeks to release v3. Updates add major features and new content to the game.
