Santa Paravia and Fiumaccio
GAME » on 1978
One of the earliest examples of an empire-building game.

Overview

An early turn-based strategy genre, eventually popularised by Civilization. Set in Renaissance Italy; each player takes turns in making decisions about grain stocks, land purchases, and how to build up their settlement. Players try to strike a balance between food stocks, population, law and order, and cash-flow. The game was heavily influenced by the earliest known computer strategy game, Hamurabi (Game). The most common reference to that game happens at the start of each turn, where players are told that "xx% of your grain store was eaten by rats".
