Overview

Taisen Hot Gimmick is a riichi mahjong (two-player variant) eroge developed and released by Psikyo (Company) for arcades in Japan in 1997. The first in the studio's series of "strip mahjong" games of the same name, Taisen Hot Gimmick has players facing off against a series of women in games of mahjong. Along with the use of the player's subordinate (a cartoon dog) as a comedic relief, the game is known for its "Oshioki" system, in which conventional stripping is replaced with different "punishments" that players can choose from (which require button mashing). Along with the standard "strip mahjong", the game features a two-player competitive mode known as "Taisen Mode" for dual-linked arcade cabinets. Less erotic and more comedic in nature, this version puts players as live actors in full-body tights (Jan Blue and Jan Red, the "Jan Fighters") as they perform unusual professional wrestling techniques by winning hands. Both modes make use of power-ups (which cost "Jan Points"). Along with a standard port to the PC (Platform) (on October 3, 2003) by My Harvest, the game was later ported to the PlayStation 2 (Platform) in Japan on April 29, 2004 as Taisen Hot Gimmick: Cosplay-jan. Published by X-Nauts, this version censors all nudity (with defeated opponents either wearing generic cosplay outfits or underwear) while adding a single-player version of Taisen Mode and an extra Bonus Mode (which grants free access to all unlocked Oshioki). This version was later ported by Zerodiv (Company) to the Nintendo Switch (Platform) in Japan as a digital release(as Taisen Hot Gimmick: Cosplay-jan for Nintendo Switch) by City Connection (Company) on July 5, 2018, which also received a worldwide localization (the first in the series to do so) on October 4, 2018 as Hot Gimmick Cosplay-jong for Nintendo Switch.
