The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain is a comedic educational puzzle mini-game collection developed and published by Sierra for Windows PCs and Macintosh computers on July 14, 1994. It received an updated Windows 95 release in 1995.

The third installment of the Dr. Brain series and the first in the series developed by the acquired Bright Star Technology (Company) team, The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain changes the formula from a point-and-click adventure game to a simple collection of mini-games, most of which can be accessed in any order. It is also built on a new mouse-based interface, and follows a new cartoon style of art, sound, and humor reminiscent of several other edutainment games at the time (with a large amount of animated voice acting).

The game's story, told in an animated cutscene, involves the eponymous Dr. Brain testing his latest invention: the "Brain Drain", a device that transfers some intellect from one creature to another. Attempting to make his pet lab rat Rathbone smarter, he accidentally swaps his own mind completely with Rathbone's. Together with Dr. Brain's niece, Dr. Elaina Brain, players must attempt to reverse the situation by re-creating solutions to every brain puzzle he has ever worked on.

Rather than following a wide array of complex topics, as previous games did, The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain focuses on simplistic puzzles with topics such as memorization, programming, and musical reading. It later received a sequel with The Time Warp of Dr. Brain.

Puzzles

The game is made up of 10 puzzles, most of which can be accessed in any order. Like previous games, there are three separate difficulty levels for each puzzle, each of which complete a larger percentage of the puzzle's overall progress (from 5%, up to 15%).

  • 3D Construction - Given a rotatable 3D model of cubes, players must recreate it by placing cubes on each row in a 2D space.
  • File Sorting - Place items in drawers of filing cabinets one-at-a-time and, when directed, must remember where items are placed and retrieve them. Higher difficulties mix things up by having two drawers swap places at times.
  • Motor Programming - Players must finish composing a program routine that guides a miniature Dr. Brain around the grid in order to collect all brain pickups while dodging enemies. Harder difficulties make use of sub-routines.
  • Music - Given a classical tune and a scrambled music sheet, swap the positions of measures to match the tune. Harder difficulties have longer and more complicated braces, requiring players to flip them horizontally or vertically.
  • Neural Maze - Guide Rathbone around a winding multi-leveled maze with various color-coded tunnels.
  • Pentode - Place tiles on a 6x4 board without overfilling it, with adjacent tiles being removed when matched. Tiles can be either Sign Language, Roman Numerals, Greek Symbols, or Chemical Elements.
  • Synaptic Cleft - Guide neurotransmitters from one cell to another via the synaptic cleft, adjusting their path by clicking on the screen (pushing them away from the cursor). Harder difficulties add objects that destroy the cell when collided.
  • Train of Thought - Given a looping trackway, players must use track switches to guide colored balls to the goal in a specific order without having the balls collide with each-other. Harder difficulties include a fourth color and more complicated tracks, including tunnels and color-specific junctions.
  • Word Surge - Players are given a grid of letter tiles, and must rotate rows horizontally and columns vertically so that all words in the list can be formed from the grid. Harder difficulties include larger grids and word lists.

Earning 100% in all nine puzzles unlocked a final tenth puzzle that, when 100% complete, finishes the game:

  • Dreamland - Guide a ball through a maze of obstacles, with the ball moving towards the player's cursor.
