Overview

The Song of Saya (沙耶の唄, Saya no Uta) is a visual novel/adventure game developed and published by Nitroplus for the PC (Platform) in Japan on December 26, 2003. The story follows a medical student's increasing closeness with a strange girl after a traumatic incident causes him to see almost everything around him as putrid meat. The Song of Saya had a considerable cult following in the United States, and English fan-translation patches existed for the game as early as 2009. However, the game only received an official English translation with JAST USA's release of the game on May 6, 2013. In 2019, JAST published an improved English release, intended for modern systems. This release also brought the game to Steam (Concept), albeit with adult scenes removed and only restorable via a separate download offered on JAST's website.

Plot

The Song of Saya follows Fuminori Sakisaka, a medical student whose life is altered when a traffic accident kills his parents and nearly kills him as well. Fuminori undergoes experimental brain surgery to save his life, but the surgery has an unintended side-effect - when he wakes he perceives the world as a hellish nightmare, with everything appearing to him as pulsating meat and blood. Ordinary people appear to him as grotesque, giant grub-like monsters with a hideous stench, and even food that he used to like now tastes utterly disgusting. He resolves quickly to keep this change a secret from the hospital's staff. As he contemplates suicide in a hospital bed, Fuminori is surprised by a young, normal-looking girl wandering the hospital's halls. Saya, is similarly surprised he sees her, and the two begin chatting. Saya explains that she's looking for her father, while Fuminori cherishes having something to latch onto which doesn't sicken him to see. A few days later, when Fuminori is set to be discharged, he asks Saya to live with him, and she agrees. Back to living in his own home and going to classes, Fuminori's friends increasingly begin to notice something amiss with him as he recedes further into living with Saya and investigating her missing father.
