Virtua Quest, known in Japan as Virtua Fighter: Cyber Generation - Judgement Six no Yabou, is a sci-fi action-adventure game developed by both TOSE and SEGA-AM2 and published by Sega (Company) for the PlayStation 2 (Platform) and GameCube (Platform) in Japan on June 26, 2004 and in North America on January 18, 2005.
An action-adventure spin-off of the Virtua Fighter (Franchise) series of fighting games, Virtua Quest is set in a futuristic sci-fi story involving virtual reality, and features 3D beat-'em-up style combat and upgradable stats and techniques.
Set in the future, the game involves a commonplace virtual world known as the "Nexus", with a guild of "Treasure Hunters" exploring neglected areas of the Nexus data servers to find lost data. Players control Sei, a teenage rookie Hunter with a special Hunter Glove, as he becomes trapped in the Nexus, only to become involved in a conspiracy involving the syndicate "Judgement Six" (or "J6").
Along with its use of martial arts, the game's relation to the mainline Virtua Fighter series involves the series's combatants as "Virtua Fighters": "ghost data" of them recorded by J6 during the Worldwide Martial Arts Championship in order to train cyborgs. By finding and dueling them, Sei can learn some of their special techniques (as "Virtua Souls").
Virtua Quest is sometimes believed to be spun off from a Virtua Fighter RPG for the Sega Saturn in the mid-to-late '90s, which itself became the 1999 action-adventure game Shenmue (Game).
The game plays similar to other 3D action-adventure and beat-'em-up games at the time, with players having access to an Attack button, a Jump button, a Guard button, along with several unique abilities:
When the SP gauge is fully depleted, abilities that make use of that gauge are temporarily disabled until it is fully replenished.
Along with a basic repertoire of attacks, Sei has access to special Virtua techniques that is accessible with a dedicated button. As he collects Virtua Souls throughout the game, he can customize his moveset with them (even combining techniques from multiple Virtua Fighters).
All of these techniques make use of the Synapse Point gauge.
Holding down and releasing the Virtua button for a charged-up strike that can break guarding enemies.
Pressing both Attack and Virtua buttons to grapple against guarding enemies.
Pressing the Virtua button while neutral performs an attack that launches enemies into the air for combos.
Pressing the Virtua button while holding the stick in any direction performs a knockback attack.
Pressing the Virtua button while running performs a dashing attack.
Pressing the Virtua button while jumping performs a mid-air attack.
