A turn-based strategy RPG based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime series, with elements from both the manga's in-universe "Capsule Monster Chess" and "Monster World" in-universe tabletop games and an original story involving Yugi setting out to rescue his friends from Kaiba's tournament.

Overview

Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule GB is a turn-based strategy RPG developed by KCE Shinjuku and published by Konami for the Game Boy Color (Platform) (with Game Boy (Platform) compatibility) exclusively in Japan on April 13, 2000. It also received a downloadable Nintendo Power (Concept) release on February 1, 2001. Based on the manga and anime series Yu-Gi-Oh!, Monster Capsule GB is the second adaptation of the in-universe board game "Capsule Monster Chess", which involve battling monster figurines on a tiled board similar to tactical RPGs (such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem). It also takes some inspiration from the in-universe tabletop RPG "Monster World", where at certain points of the game the player becomes an adventurer who must complete the high-fantasy quest of a "Dark Master" (albeit with Capsule Monster Chess rules). Unlike Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule: Breed andamp;amp;amp; Battle, Monster Capsule GB features an RPG element similar to the Pokémon series, along with an original story set sometime after the manga's "Death-T" arc. Players guide Yugi Muto (Character) up the "Duel Tower" built by the mysteriously-revived Seto Kaiba (Character), who has sealed the souls of Yugi's friends into figurines in order to challenge him to a Monster World Tournament for his Millennium Puzzle. Much of the game involves collecting Monster Capsules and dueling others in Capsule Monster Chess to win enough Star Chips in order to challenge each floor's Duel Master in their Monster World quest. It was later included in the 2025 compilation Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection, where it was translated for the overseas release.
