Abbott State Penitentary is a prison located on Carnate Island. Abbotts homicide ratings are higher than any other prison in the USA. There were six full-scale riots in the last twenty years prior to the events of the first Suffering. Also most officers who are to be transfered to Abbott quit rather than accept.
Over the years Abbott has employed numerous execution methods; electrocution, gas and lethal injection have all been done within its walls. The latter still in use today. The malefactors that appeared on the game represent those different ways of execution
Further contribution to Abbott's dark stories is the one of Captain Hermes Haight, the Corrections Officer in charge of execution for twenty-seven year. In a surreal incident Haight took his own life in the gas chamber.
