Overview
Blackwater is the largest town/city in Red Dead Redemption (Game). You explore the town during the third and final part of the game. There, you meet a variety of characters including government agent Edgar Ross (Character) who plays a key role in the story's ending. You also meet Harold MacDougal (Character), a drug addict for whom you do missions for. Little is known about the town's history. According to a newspaper in the game, a major shootout appropriately titled the "Massacre of Blackwater" took place in the year 1899 between Landon Ricketts (Character) and the Van der Linde gang. The town is fairly big with docks and a town hall. There are a variety of shops and bars that the player can visit as well as "strangers" to interact with. One mission tasks you with foiling a bank heist while in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, you must cleanse the town of all zombies.
Background
Blackwater Massacre (1899)
The Blackwater Massacre was the result of a steamboat robbery perpertrated by the Van der Linde gang. Most every outlaw gang member participated the robbery and massacre. Only two senior gang members, Arthur Morgan (Character) and Hosea Matthews (Character), did not follow through on the heist and instead focused their efforts on a real estate scam in the town. Most of the details surrounding the heist and ensuing massacre are unclear. Only one civilian casualty is named as Heidi McCourt, a young mother who was brutally shot in the head by Dutch under known circumstances. John Marston (Character) describes the event as being "not pretty" and reveals that himself, Javier Escuella (Character) and Micah Bell (Character) all witnessed the murder and that Micah encouraged it. The gang also suffered a number of casualties:
- Davey Callendar : fatally shot in the stomach and buried in Colter.
- Mac Callendar : found injured and killed by the Pinkertons.
- Jenny Kirk : wounded and died of her injuries shortly before Davey. She was buried north of Colter.
Immediately after the massacre, the Van der Linde gang fled east into the mountains. Meanwhile the Pinkertons began patrolling Blackwater as well as the neighboring state of New Austin for several months following the massacre.
